Key Sucess Factors

  1. Plant Managment Engagement
    1. Definition of a 5S champion for the facility to facilitate the administration of the system
    2. Divide the plant in sub-areas and assign a responsible for each area to execute plan
    3. Plant Manager to lead 5S walks to drive the message for the entire facility that this is an important topic for the organization
    4. Ensure actions are driving progression to achieving 5S
    5. 5S score should be part of every person’s goals
  2. Clear Understanding of current state, vision of current state, and actions to get there
    1. Have an assessment schedule, red tag, and a process to communicate current state
    2. Perform deep cleaning events to get plan to “initial conditions”
    3. Have a clear vision of the “ideal” state and once it is reached post it in the area for team to see how each area should look
    4. Have a detailed action plan on who is doing what when to progress from 1S to 5s
    5. If you are starting the 5S system, choose a pilot area to set the bar to the entire facility on what’s expected.
  3. Follow a disciplined approach and go through each progression level
    1. Perform the steps 1 to 5 in the order
    2. Note: Do not start cleaning if you have not established what is necessary in 1S or assigned a place for everything in 2S.
  4. Monitor system execution and effectiveness of actions
    1. Ensure there is a cleaning schedule to maintain the ideal status
    2. Ensure cleaning stations are available to the team members
    3. Ensure all contamination sources are eliminated
    4. Continue with cross-assessments and apply visual management to administrate abnormalities
    5. Recognize top performing areas
